Introduction and Application

The chemical formula of nitrogen, a basic substance composed solely of the nitrogen element, is N∈. This gas is colorless, tasteless and possesses the unique quality of being inert under typical temperature and pressure conditions. Ammonia can be produced by catalytic reaction with hydrogen at high temperature and pressure, while nitric oxide can be generated by combining with oxygen under discharge. Only active metals, such as Ca, Mg, Sr and Ba, display reactivity with nitrogen under high heating conditions.

 

Due to its chemical stability, nitrogen is commonly used in many environments where reactivity is undesired. Its inert nature allows for various applications, particularly in anaerobic settings. One prominent use is in containers where nitrogen displaces air, providing insulation, flame resistance, explosion-proof capabilities, and anti-corrosion properties. This versatile technology finds implementation across industrial and civil sectors, including maintenance of light hydrocarbon units, LPG engineering, purging of gas transmission pipelines and liquefied gas pipe networks. Another useful application involves utilizing nitrogen as a protective gas during the packaging of processed food and medicine, cable sealing, telephone line protection, and pressurizing expandable rubber tires. Additionally, nitrogen serves as a preservative by displacing well fluids, effectively slowing down corrosion resulting from string and formation fluid contact.
